Following medical school, Dr. McLaughlin completed a surgical internship and otolaryngology-head and neck surgery residency at Emory University School of Medicine.  He received the Resident Research Award on two occasions and presented over a dozen papers at national meetings.  Following his residency, he was awarded the Rhinology and Sinus Surgery Fellowship position at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.  He trained under Dr. David Kennedy and Dr. William Bolger.  Dr. Kennedy is the “Father of Sinus Surgery”.  Dr. Kennedy coined the term “functional endoscopic sinus surgery” and created the minimally invasive technique that we now use to perform sinus surgery.

After his fellowship training in Philadelphia, Dr. McLaughlin and his family returned to Louisiana.  Dr. McLaughlin is assistant professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery in the LSU School of Medicine.  He is responsible for medical student and resident education as it pertains to sinus surgery, rhinology, smell and taste disorders, sleep medicine, and obstructive sleep apnea surgery.  In 2005 Dr. McLaughlin became the 13th otolaryngologist in the entire United States to be both Board certified in the medical and surgical management of obstructive sleep apnea.  Dr. McLaughlin is one of only a dozen physicians that serves on the national subcommittee for sleep disorders as well as sinus disorders for the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.  These committees are responsible for setting the national standards as set forth by the American Academy of Otolaryngology for the management of obstructive sleep apnea and sinusitis.  In addition to medical education and patient care, Dr. McLaughlin is active in clinical research.  He recently published a paper looking at the safety and efficacy of the use of minimally invasive balloons to open sinuses in children suffering from chronic sinusitis.  Current ongoing research projects include evaluation of new techniques in performing better sinus surgery.

Dr. McLaughlin maintains two active practices.  His academic/medical school practice is located in Baton Rouge where he sees patients referred by other ENTs around the state of Louisiana and from around the country for complex sinus disorders and obstructive sleep apnea.  Dr. McLaughlin and his family live on the North Shore.  Dr. McLaughlin maintains a private practice in Mandeville where he sees both children and adults with any and all ear, nose, and throat problems.

Dr. McLaughlin is a member of the house staff at St. Tammany Parish Hospital, Lakeview Regional Medical Center, Pontchartrain Surgery Center, and Fairway Medical Center.  It is Dr. McLaughlin’s honor and privilege to be a member of this community, and he looks forward to being your doctor.

Dr. Mc Laughlin is board certified by the American Board Of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery as well as the American Board of Sleep Medicine.
